IMPORTANT MESSAGE: Building Project Timeline

At tonight’s Regular Board Meeting (Thursday, January 17, 2019) the Athens City School District Board of Education approved the time line for the construction of the Elementary/Middle School portion of the ACSD Master Plan. In an effort to keep you informed I wanted you to receive this information as quickly as possible following the meeting.

ACSD Master Plan: Elementary/Middle School Construction Timeline:

Phase I

Winter 2019/2020 through Summer 2021:  Construct 2 new PK-3 Buildings at the current locations of East ES and MGES

Phase II

Summer 2021 through Summer 2022:  Complete Renovation/Addition at the current TPES to create the new Grades 4-6 Intermediate School

**Complete updates and safety modifications to AMS during summer months between Summer 2019 and Summer 2022.

In order to accommodate the above schedule, it will be necessary to vacate East Elementary School at the end of the current school year, as it is not possible to construct a new building at that location while the current building is still standing.  Demolition of the current East ES building would occur Summer-Fall 2019.

The students who currently attend East Elementary School will be combined with those students who currently attend West Elementary School beginning at the start of the 2019-2020 school year.  Students in Grades K-5 in the current East and West Elementary School attendance areas will be attending school at the West ES location and the 6th Grade students from those existing attendance areas will attend school at Athens Middle School for the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 school years while the new PK-3 building at East is being constructed.  The 6th Grade Students attending the AMS location would remain on the later daily schedule, would not attend classes with 7th/8th grade students, and would have separate lunch and recess, as well as Art, Music and Physical Education classes.

This two phase plan will allow for both PK-3 school buildings to open at the same time, thereby assuring greater equity for all students as we transition to the new elementary school configuration. In the short term, the plan will address existing concerns with large class sizes at the current East and West Elementary Schools.

Overview:

  • Locate Current East/West Grades K-5 @ West Elementary School for the 19-20 and 20-21 School Years
  • Locate Current East/West 6th Grade @ Athens Middle School for the 19-20 and 20-21 School Years
  • Will approve the continued attendance of all existing open enrollment students
  • Will accept siblings of any current open enrolled student into Kindergarten
  • Will create 6 additional classroom spaces at the West ES location by re-purposing space within the building and/or by using two-three temporary classroom spaces

I am sure you will have many questions regarding this plan and the logistics as we move forward. The administration, faculty and staff will begin meeting to finalize plans as quickly as possible and we will communicate details to you as they are finalized.  As always we invite you to attend our next School Board meeting which will be February 21st at 6:30 p.m. at Athens High School.

Thank you for your support in this exciting time in our district.

Sincerely,

Tom Gibbs
