Students, teachers, parents and members of our community, welcome to the 2017-18 school year! It is exciting to see students back learning in our classrooms and participating in our many extra-curricular programs. We’re working on new and advanced ways to reach every learner every day throughout our school district.
Our team is off to a great start this year. Before the school year started, our staff completed a successful week of enhanced professional development. Our talented group of teachers, staff members and administrators is ready and excited to lead our learners into another school year poised for continued improvement.
The class of 2017 at Athens High School earned the highest ACT scores in the last five years, and we showed progress in every subject area. Athens students are outperforming the state average in every ACT category. Additionally, we’ve made impressive academic progress in many areas of the state report card.
We’re proud to see our students excelling, and we’re working on ways to continue on this path of improvement. We’re fully implementing the writing best practices identified from last year’s committee guided pilot program and continuing our approach in mathematics referred to as “Cognitively Guided Instruction” to help our students gain a broader understanding of the foundation of mathematics.
Our technology in the school district continues to improve as every school now has wireless internet capability and every grade is now using Chromebooks. We’re working on a long-range plan on how to effectively utilize technology, along side our great teachers, within the entire district.
I feel grateful to have tremendous community engagement surrounding our students and schools. Thank you for your feedback and collaboration last year, and I look forward to continuing that support this year. Our students, teachers, parents and members of the community have offered amazing feedback on how we can embody “Every Learner. Every Day.” within our district. Thank you, and let’s make this year great together.
