Athens High School students Iris Lee, Gabe Adair, Madi Stein, Gage Rapp, Scarlett Brobeck, and Jo Zulia-Davis were selected to perform with the Ohio University Honor Bands on Saturday, December 6. The honor bands were directed by Dr. William Talley, Director of Bands at Ohio University, and Dr. Richard Suk, Associate Director of Bands and Director of the Ohio University Marching 110.

The following AHS Symphonic Choir members participated in Ohio University Honor Choir last weekend: Marek Ausseresses, Ruby Callahan, Summer Forster, Lucy Isaac, and Jack Phillips. 

The Athens students worked with OU music school faculty and selected singers from other districts to prepare a concert in just 2 days. Their concert, led by Director of Choral Activities Dr. Peter Haley, also featured OU ensembles Bella Voce and Singing Men of Ohio.

The Athens City School District's Andrew Jackson Davison Clubs traveled to Columbus to showcase their past, present and future projects at the Ohio School Board Association annual conference.  The AJD Club was well received and the students spoke eloquently about the local history work that engages them in our community.

AHS proudly honored local veterans with a reception and an assembly!  The AHS Student Council greeted veterans with an informal reception, read their names to recognize their service, and poems to honor the valor of serving. The band and choir debuted and beautifully performed a collaborative piece, "From Sea to Shining Sea." Mr. John King, the keynote speaker, gave an impactful speech on the importance of volunteerism. Veterans, we thank you for your service!

The AMS Andrew Jackson Davison Club research team walked to Alden Library to visit the archives and special collections. Students were perusing Arena yearbooks from the early 20th century to investigate possible AJD Club topics and to help a local musician with a project.

AMS Student Council and AJD Club joined together to host our annual Veterans Day assembly.  The Plains VFW recognized AMS writers for writing an essay for the Patriot's Pen competition.  The VFW thanked AMS students for visiting veterans at the Chillicothe Veterans hospital.  Associate Superintendent John Rogers's brother, Sargent Ryan Rogers, spoke to students about the privilege of receiving an education that is uniquely American.  Veteran and Superintendent Mr. Springer honored our guest veterans and encouraged students to learn from their stories.

Joe Burrow's generous donation to our Playground Shade Project enabled us to complete the project in a much shorter period than we expected! The PTO and Morrison-Gordon Principal, Heather Skinner, recently met with Joe Burrow’s parents, Robin and Jimmy, to show them the 4 shade canopies and 7 table umbrellas in the courtyard of the playground.

Big congratulations to our Athens FFA Soil Judging Teams! Both the Ag and Urban teams practiced their skills during our first contest of the year. Our Ag Soils Team took 1st place at the Multi-County Soil Judging Contest!  Special shoutout to Fern Sigman, who placed 1st individually, and Zac Shoemaker, who earned an impressive 3rd place!  Great job representing Athens FFA with knowledge and pride!

AHS honored Patriot Day with a thoughtful reflection led by Principal April Stewart, who shared a summary of the events of 9/11 and how they forever changed our nation and its people. During morning announcements, an AHS student shared powerful quotes in remembrance. To close the tribute, the Symphonic Choir performed the Pledge of Allegiance in the atrium, filling the school with music and unity.

The AHS Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony was held on August 22 at Athens High School, celebrating the achievements of outstanding Bulldog athletes and contributors. This year’s inductees were also recognized during the home football game, where the community joined in honoring their lasting impact on AHS athletics, Don McInturf, Rick Mansfield, Catherine Gorman Brown and Steve Abdella.

Eighth grade social studies teacher Angela Hall spoke at the 2025 AASLH (American Association for State and Local History) Annual Conference with Jessica Cyders (Southeastern Ohio History Center) and Brian Koscho (Invisible Ground) .  Their session was titled "Engagement Over Content:  Field Trips That Develop Historical Thinking Skills and Pride of Place."  Mrs. Hall's social studies classes will begin taking walking field trips this Wednesday.  During these field trips, students will develop historical thinking skills that allow them to expertly analyze primary and secondary sources.  Students will also learn about the history of the Athens Middle School neighborhood including the historically Black westside neighborhood, the W. State Street Cemetery, our community's early economy, and so much more!  If these activities and skills interest your student, please email Mrs. Hall about joining the Middle School Chapter of the Andrew Jackson Davison Club.

Teacher Dee Morgan, Principals Beth Braun, (East), Angie Haning (AMS), Heather Skinner (Morrison-Gordon), Cyndi Hartman & April Stewart (AHS) attended the Reading Science Academy’s Explicit Instruction Academy with Dr. Anita Archer. We are excited to share and implement our new knowledge with the Athens City Schools staff!

Athens FFA Animal Management State Contest
Athens FFA Animal Management State Contest

In November the Athens FFA represented our chapter proudly with two teams competing at state contests! In Animal Management, two members qualified to compete at the state level, and the team placed 19th overall. Individually, Fern Sigman finished 80th and Jesse Vaughn 104th. An impressive accomplishment out of more than 1,200 members who took the online test.  In Aquarium Management, the team earned 17th place in the state. Team members included Zac Shoemaker, Janey Lucas, Jay Irwin, Kaya Fesenmyer, Zara Pittaway, and Saveah Springer.

ACSD Schools

Athens City Schools has one high school for grades 9-12, Athens High School and one middle school for grades 7-8, Athens Middle School.  There is one Intermediate building for grades 4-6, The Plains Intermediate.  There are two elementary buildings for grades preschool-3, East Elementary and Morrison-Gordon Elementary.
