Athens FFA members spent the day working with the Athens Soil and Water Conservation District to help them count and wrap trees that will be planted in several different counties in Southeastern Ohio and West Virginia. Even though it was a little chilly, our students enjoyed the day.
Three FFA members attended the State FFA Nature Interpretation career development event at Hocking College, where they used skulls, skins, pictures and furs to identify various wildlife samples and provided responses to questions concerning wildlife attraction, water quality evaluation and the control of problem plants and animals.
AHS students Prem Koshal, Aviva Wood, Sophia Szolosi and Vlada Kiryukhin earned the award of Southeast Ohio Regional Science and Engineering Fair Champions.
Angie Hall, AMS Social Studies teacher, was honored at the Mount Zion Black Cultural Center's Annual Meeting on March 23, 2025 with their Beacon of Light Award. The Mount Zion Preservation Society and its members continue to be supportive community stakeholders with the Andrew Jackson Davison Clubs. They recently brought a great mural project to the High School and Middle School Clubs. Their commitment to our students and to preserving history make them a true asset to Athens City School District.
The Greenhouse and Nursery Management class toured Bob’s Market and Greenhouses, Inc. production greenhouse in Mason, WV. Our students gained insight into the greenhouse industry and learned how the family business expanded from two small backyard greenhouses to an operation that cultivates over 150 million young plants annually, shipping them along the east coast and as far west as Texas.
Excitement filled the air at The Plains Intermediate School as talented 5th and 6th grade students showcased a vibrant preview of their upcoming play for their classmates.
The AHS varsity cheerleaders earned 1st place in two divisions at the 2025 International Cheerleading Championships held at Universal Studios Orlando. The team also earned the High Point Award for being the top scoring team in all traditional cheer divisions.
Twelve talented TPIS 6th Graders showcased their incredible work at our in-school Science Fair on February 13, 2025. We are proud to announce that seven outstanding 6th grade students—Evelyn Blazier, Grant Fisher, Sabine Hatch, Oliver Martin, Theo Nunemaker, Owen Wayner, Sam Stork, and Minh Koi Vo—will represent us at the Regional Science Day at Ohio University on Saturday, March 22, 2025
The AHS ART CLUB, with support from the Joe Burrow Foundation and Athens Artists Memorial Project hosted a series of activities where students could slow down, make new friends and make some art together. Students who participated also got free art supplies! This was part of a full week of activities designed to encourage students to explore new ways to support their mental health.

Congratulations to the AMS MATHCOUNTS team (Yadier Jokisch, Chloe Livanis, Ken Rath and Linus Tangonan) for honorably representing Athens City Schools and AM Sat the Ohio State MATHCOUNTS competition on Saturday, March 15th! We are very proud of your hard work! AMS Math Teacher, Melanie McGrath is the coach of this team.
The AHS Symphonic Choir spent a Friday at Ohio University participating with other regional choirs in the Ohio University Choral Invitational. The choir had the opportunity to perform for and work with visiting professors as well as OU experts. They enjoyed meeting other singers and hearing performances by OU voice faculty and choral ensembles.
Three students from Mrs. Gagliano’s Ceramics classes had their work selected out of 1,032 entries, for the NSECA National K-12 Ceramic Exhibition, where it will be seen by thousands of visitors who travel internationally to attend the 59th annual Conference of the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NSECA). It is the first time AHS students have had work selected for a national exhibition of this caliber. Huge Congratulations to Achyn Binkly, Annabelle Lachman and Ludi Briscoe!
These four FFA members spent Tuesday, February 25th sharpening their skills at judging cattle, pigs, sheep and goats during the Gallia County Invitational Livestock Judging Contest.
Chelsie Pidcock is our 24-25 Athens FFA Treasurer. Her treasurer's book was graded in January, and her outstanding record keeping earned her a Gold Rating. She will receive her award during the Ohio FFA Convention in May. Congratulations on a job well done!!
Congratulations to Leif Siegel, a 9th grader at Athens High School, for being selected to represent Ohio at the Appalachian STEM Academy Bridge Program for the second year in a row!
This prestigious program, hosted by Oak Ridge Associated Universities in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, brings together top students to collaborate with master teachers, university researchers, and STEM professionals. They will engage in hands-on research projects, culminating in a final presentation to regional and state leaders.

Athens Middle School student Ryleigh Smith has earned the honor of representing the State of Ohio as a delegate at the Breakthrough Type 1 Diabetes Children's Congress (formerly JDRF). This July, she will travel to Washington D.C. for training and invaluable discussions with members of Congress about her journey living with Type 1 Diabetes and the critical importance of finding a cure.
