AHS French Students Celebrate Mardi Gras
After learning about the history of Mardi Gras and how different people celebrate it in Louisiana, Mme Myers’ French classes enjoyed making masks and eating some traditional King Cake. Three lucky students found the plastic baby baked inside!
Athens FFA Food Science Team Places 5th at Districts!
The Athens FFA Food Science Team competed in the District Food Science Contest back in December and earned an impressive 5th Place overall! The Ohio FFA Association Career Development Event – Food Science is a rigorous competition that challenges students in multiple areas. This contest requires strong knowledge of food science principles, math skills, teamwork, problem-solving, and professionalism.
AHS Band Director Aaron Backes Participates in 2026 Rose Bowl Parade
Athens City Schools band director Aaron Backes was selected to join a marching band of more than 350 band directors from across North America in the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade on January 1, 2026. The Saluting America’s Band Directors project brought together band directors and a colorful float to recognize the extraordinary dedication and accomplishments of band directors and music educators everywhere.
AHS Key Club & NHS Members Volunteering at Food Bank
Twenty-eight Athens High School students volunteered at the Southeast Ohio Food Bank, representing both National Honor Society and Key Club.
Together, they packed 965 boxes to support hundreds of families across the food bank’s ten-county region this holiday season. We are incredibly proud of their teamwork, service, and Bulldog pride, which truly reflects the spirit of giving.
Athens FFA Animal Management State Contest
In November the Athens FFA represented our chapter proudly with two teams competing at state contests! In Animal Management, two members qualified to compete at the state level, and the team placed 19th overall. Individually, Fern Sigman finished 80th and Jesse Vaughn 104th. An impressive accomplishment out of more than 1,200 members who took the online test.
Athens FFA Aquarium Management State Contest
In November the Athens FFA represented our chapter proudly with two teams competing at state contests! In Aquarium Management, the team earned 17th place in the state. Team members included Zac Shoemaker, Janey Lucas, Jay Irwin, Kaya Fesenmyer, Zara Pittaway, and Saveah Springer.

Athens City Schools has one high school for grades 9-12, Athens High School and one middle school for grades 7-8, Athens Middle School. There is one Intermediate building for grades 4-6, The Plains Intermediate. There are two elementary buildings for grades preschool-3, East Elementary and Morrison-Gordon Elementary.
