Our district recently participated in a nationally recognized Farm to School activity called Apple Crunch Day. All children in the district were offered a locally grown apple from Wagner Farm on Friday, October 28. (East will be Wednesday, November 2.) Some of the funds raised at the recent Farm to School event were used to purchase the 2600 apples. Rural Action managed the bid, and Hocking College Culinary Arts students washed the apples. Parent volunteers brought the apples to students in each school and helped distribute them.
The main purpose of the activity was to not only expose the children to a locally sourced fruit, but to also establish the connection between the food and the actual farmer that grew and harvested it (Wagner Farm).
P.S. The Farm to School committee is looking for adult and student volunteers! Please email email@example.com if you are interested in becoming more involved in Farm to School efforts.
