Facilities Steering Committee Press Release 1/20/2017

On January 10th and 11th, 2017, the Athens City School District Facilities Steering Committee hosted two public meetings at Athens High School.  Approximately 220 members of the community attended and participated in conversation and provided feedback to members of the committee regarding three options for reconfiguring the building/grade level structure of the District.  Additionally, individual committee members have been hosting meetings at each building through the parent-teacher organizations and associations, as well as with school faculty and staff.  These conversations are an important part of the process, as the information provided to the committee will help committee members to continue a more informed and enriched discussion regarding the many important factors surrounding any decision related to school facilities.

Since the time of the meetings last week, representatives from the Athens Foundation have been synthesizing the input and categorizing the information provided into themes.  This information will be provided to members of the committee and to the broader community as an overview of the public conversation that has already occurred so that a continued dialogue can continue between all stakeholders.  The process has not concluded.  No decisions have been made by the committee and no recommendations have yet been made to the members of the Athens City School District Board of Education.

In the coming weeks more information will become available from the Ohio School Facilities Commission in regards to our updated building assessments, the estimates for costs to renovate/build new buildings, and estimated bond issue amounts. That information will be made available to the members of the committee and to the community to permit a more thorough review of our current facilities assets and how we may best utilize those assets to implement a given proposal in relation to location, building, and the necessary infrastructure investment.  All final decisions will be based on the data available to the committee and the Board of Education.
