Earlier this summer a small group of employees and community partners started the process of discussing issues related to bias and discrimination in our school district and broader community. As a first step, an initial survey was emailed out in June. Survey respondents were asked to provide contact information if they wanted to be included in face-to-face conversations about bias and discrimination at a later time. Those who included contact information on the survey have been invited to a focus group meeting on September 12th at 6:30 p.m. at Athens High School.
We would like to make other families aware of the focus groups on the 12th. Some survey respondents did not provide contact information and some parents may have been out of town or on vacation during the survey window. Additionally, only middle school and high school families were included on the initial survey. If you would like to attend our focus group meeting on September 12th, please let Dr. Gibbs know by 4 p.m. on September 7th. Dr. Gibbs can most easily be reached via email at firstname.lastname@example.org or you can call his office at 740-797-4544 and let Denise Bowles know about your interest in attending. Please provide your name, email address and phone number with your RSVP.
If you aren't available on September 12th and still want to be a part of this important conversation, please know that it is our goal to distribute additional information and host additional events throughout the year (and beyond). Changing culture is hard work and will take some time, but we are certain that by working together we can make a more inclusive, safe school and community environment for all of our students and families.
