Important Information about Athens City Schools and the November 6th Election

ACSD Bond Vote Information Graphic

One of the biggest threats to our district’s financial stability is the condition of our schools.

  • On the November 6th election, voters will see an issue to provide funding to build or renovate our schools.
  • The plan calls for new school buildings at: East Elementary, Morrison-Gordon Elementary and Athens High School. The ballot issue also includes renovations to Athens Middle School and a renovation/addition at The Plains Elementary.
  • All of the district’s buildings have serious mechanical and structural issues that must be addressed. In some instances, buildings require extensive repairs or need to be completely replaced.

There is no zero-cost option.

  • If we are not able to find a way to address the district’s facilities soon there will be a day-to-day impact on students’ education because we will have to begin to divert funds from our daily operating budget to maintain our buildings.
  • Our custodial and maintenance crews do an excellent job but they simply cannot outwork the antiquated and serious infrastructure issues facing our schools.

The district’s current Master Facility Plan includes matching state funds of 32%. That’s the equivalent of a 32% discount for Athens CSD taxpayers.

  • The district can only capture the state dollars if the community provides the remaining funds (ie: passage of a bond issue).
  • If a ballot issue is approved by Athens voters, then the same state fund that has funded other new school projects throughout Ohio would be used for Athens.
