West Elementary 5th & 6th Graders Participate in District Science Fair

West Elementary Science Fair Participants 2019

Sixteen 5th and 6th grade students from West Elementary competed on March 23rd at the District 12 Science Day. These students earned the right to compete at the District Science Day by receiving a Superior rating at the West Elementary Science Fair in November. The students competing were Ethan Bowman, Lizzie Castelino, Ledger Free, Sebastian Grippa, Liza Hartman, Max Jacops, David Johnson, Iris Kachenko, Kayli Kuhlman, Miles Makosky, Cael McCarthy, Oliver Megert, Meika Monroe, Teresa Ongoro, Rachel Prange, and Noah Sincoff. They competed against 5th through 12th grade students from 7 counties in Southeast Ohio.

 

Of these students, Bowman, Castelino, Hartman, Jacops, Johnson, Kachenko,I ris Kuhlman, McCarthy, and Prange received Superior Awards at the District Fair and have qualified to compete at the State Science Day on May 11th on the Ohio State University campus. In addition to the superior ratings, individuals won awards specific to their areas of study.

David Johnson

  • Ohio Water Council award
  • Naval Science junior division award
  • A 529 Tuition Plan

Lizzie Castelino

  • Outstanding Project award from the Ohio University Physics and Astronomy Department
  • A 529 Tuition Plan

Ethan Bowman

  • Outstanding Project award from the Ohio University Physics and Astronomy Department

Cael McCarthy

  • Outstanding Project award from the Ohio University Physics and Astronomy Department

Kayli Kuhlman

  • Superior award from the Ohio University Biological Sciences Department

Kayli Kuhlman

  • Superior award from the Ohio University Biological Sciences Department

Rachel Prange

  • Superior award from the Ohio University Applied Health Sciences and Wellness

Max Jacops

  • 1st place award for 5th and 6th grade from Ohio University Chemistry and Biochemistry Department?

 

In addition to these awards, 4 students; Castelino, Johnson, Kachenko and Jacops were given Broadcom Masters awards, qualifying them to compete in a national online science fair.
