The number one draft pick in the NFL, Appalachian Ohio's hometown Heisman hero, has announced a new fund.
Today, Joe Burrow announced that the Athens County Food Pantry was investing a portion of the many gifts inspired by his Heisman Trophy acceptance speech to create the Joe Burrow Hunger Relief Fund with the Foundation for Appalachian Ohio.
The many gifts inspired by Joe's Heisman speech have already begun making an immediate impact through the Athens County Food Pantry’s work. Yet even the incredible outpouring of gifts raised in December – totaling $650,000 – is nowhere near enough to come close to eliminating the crisis of food insecurity in Athens County or southeast Ohio more broadly. That's why the Food Pantry invested $350,000 to create the Joe Burrow Hunger Relief Fund, which will support its mission to make a difference in food insecurity across southeast Ohio long-term. The Foundation for Appalachian Ohio matched the Food Pantry's investment dollar-for-dollar to create an endowment fund of $700,000.
Joe encourages all those with a heart for southeast Ohio who are able to play a part in growing the fund, to ensure long-lasting resources for the fight against food insecurity.
The pantry has been serving Athens County since 1980, delivering aid in the form of direct food distribution. An all-volunteer nonprofit organization, the pantry's dedicated team works to ensure that food is always available for those in need.
Every gift to the Joe Burrow Hunger Relief Fund will support the Athens County Food Pantry in making a difference in food insecurity across southeast Ohio. But we need your help.
As Appalachian Ohio's communities respond to Joe Burrow's challenge, play your part with a gift today.
P.S. – It's now easier than ever to support the Fund with a gift. Thanks to changes from the CARES Act, taxpayers will now be able to claim up to $300 in charitable contributions as a deduction on their 2020 tax returns without itemizing.
