Fall time is about embracing the changing of the seasons, enjoying the crisp air, and enjoying new harvest!

October is National Farm to School Month. National Farm to School Month is a celebration to appreciate the connections happening across the country between kids, families, and their community food systems.

October's Harvest of the Month is APPLES! Ohio farmers grow over 100 million pounds of apples every fall! Apple Crunch Day is looking a little different this year. We are encouraging everyone to bite into a fresh apple at home or try out a new recipe with apples!

How to Participate

  • We will be distributing apples, ready for a DRIVE THRU pickup at the ACSD Food Pantry on Wednesday, October 21st from 5:00 - 5:30 pm. The apples are donated by Cherry Orchard Farms in Crooksville, OH.
  • ACSD Food Pantry, Athens Early Learning Center located at 21 Birge Drive Chauncey OH.
  • All are welcome!

A Conversation with Food Services Director, Timarie Francis!

What is your favorite part of your position at ACSD?

As I am very new to my position, my favorite part is meeting new people and learning new ways to incorporate fresh food in our breakfast and lunch program.

What are some ways students can bring National Farm to School Month home?

Students are being provided content through their virtual classrooms to learn more about the gardens at the school and surrounding areas. However, families can go to our local farmers market on Wednesday and Saturdays and meet some of the amazing people working in our region. For ACSD, we use Shagbark chips and the Chesterhill Produce Auction to get items from local farmers to use in our lunches.
