After careful consideration of data related to the spread of Covid-19 in Athens County and in collaboration with the Athens City-County Health Department, it is necessary that we make a temporary move to full remote learning for all students for a period of time to mitigate additional community spread. As such, we will be making the following changes:
- Continue the in-person hybrid model through the end of the First Semester (December 21, 2020).
- Move to full remote instruction for all students on January 4, 2021 and remain in remote instruction for all students through January 22, 2021.
- Return to in-person hybrid classes on January 25, 2021.
Please keep in mind that our ability to remain open for in-person instruction until Winter Break is contingent upon the volume of local cases and our local healthcare system's ability to respond. Additionally, our ability to return to in-person instruction on January 25th is contingent upon improvement in the level of spread and the impact the spread of Covid-19 is having on our local healthcare system.
Building Principals will be communicating any building specific changes to the daily schedule and other relevant information related to the temporary return to remote instruction prior to Winter Break.
We have had some families request that their students coming to school in person be changed to the fully remote cohort. As we've assigned staffing based on those who chose remote instruction for the full year, it is not possible to change students back and forth between cohorts. However, please be aware that if a family chooses not to send their child to school for in-person instruction and clearly communicates with the building principal that the family is "self-isolating" due to increasing Covid-19 numbers locally, the student will not be counted absent as long as they complete the assignments posted to the student's Canvas classes by each of their classroom teachers.
The faculty, staff, administration and members of the Athens City School District Board of Education appreciate your continued support and flexibility as we make every attempt to respond to the constantly changing situation related to the Covid-19 pandemic.
