AHS Speech and Debate Team meets on Tuesdays and Fridays after school from 3:00 to 4:30 pm in varying locations from fall to early spring. The goal is to build skills through competition at tournaments around the state. The team’s primary focus is on Lincoln Douglas stye debate, although any style available at tournaments is possible.
The team does not receive financial support from ACSD, so parental involvement is necessary for traveling to tournaments, for serving as judges, and for covering tournament fees which range from $3 to $10 per debater in addition to fees to cover travel and for the state and national association fees. Parents are needed to train as and serve as judges for tournaments. For any student interested and willing to do the preparation and work, every effort will be made to obtain the necessary support. Any community and/or parents willing to train and serve as judges are encouraged to connect with the coach.
Debate is a wonderful, and sometimes humbling opportunity, to grow and learn from experience. It requires excellent writing, speaking, and critical thinking skills. The team prepares students, however, it is the application of these skills that is the truest test of effectiveness and can only be honed one debate at a time.
