AHS Speech & Debate Team

Last Updated: 4/6/2021 12:18 PM

AHS Speech and Debate Team is a growing team of enthusiastic debaters who represent the high school at tournaments across the state (and, as of the past year, online). In the past, we have focused on Lincoln Douglas debate and recently branched into Original Oratory speech. However, any event available at tournaments is available for team members to practice and compete in.

In 2021, the team will meet once weekly after school in varying locations from fall to early spring. At practice, we work collectively to learn about and prepare for our respective events, ranging from editing our written work to round-robin impromptu speeches.

Attending tournaments is not mandatory, but following preparation, it is encouraged to all who are interested. The team does not receive financial support from ACSD, so parental involvement can be necessary to travel to tournaments, serve as judges, and cover tournament fees. Fees can range from $3 to $10 per debater, in addition to fees to cover travel and for the state and national association fees. Parents can be trained to serve as judges for tournaments, no prior experience is necessary.

Any community members or parents willing to train and serve as judges are encouraged to connect with the coach.
