The Southeast Ohio Model United Nations event was held on Friday, December 13th at Ohio University Baker Center. Over three hundred and eighty delegates from twelve school districts including; Alexander, Athens, Eastern Local, Gallia County Local, Gallia Academy, Jackson, Meigs, Miller, Nelsonville York, Southern Local, Trimble, and Wellston City Schools competed in cultural presentations and debate.
Athens City Schools' 56 delegates from 6th, 7th and 8th grades won ten awards including:
- Best Technological Presentations from Morocco represented by Anna Maria Montle, Allegra Galiano, Ludi Briscoe, Razan Al-Abdullatif, Venezuela represented by Prem Koshal, Liam Duquette, Ezra Hatch and Corey Mulligan, and Ecuador represented by Eden Radcliff, Addie McGarry and Leah Swatzel achieved top scores.
- Best Cultural Product Presentations from Singapore represented by Xinrui Han, Demetra Zaros, Shelby Davenport and Eve Kelley as well as China represented by Emerson Crowl, Alexander Wotschka and Helen Liu won medals and plaques.
- Best Nation Awards went to the Federated States of Micronesia represented by Joonwoo Park, Samuel Ha and Samuel Kim, and for the second time during the awards ceremony Poland represented by Zach Barsamin and Luke Mullins, Singapore represented by Xinrui Han, Demetra Zaros, Shelby Davenport and Eve Kelley and Venezuela represented by Prem Koshal, Liam Duquette, Ezra Hatch and Corey Mulligan took home multiple awards.
Gifted Educator, Dr. Lyndi Maxwell, and Talented and Gifted Education Director, Amy Peterson, served as advisors for the event. The Regional Coordinators of Southeast Ohio host the event and train high school officers and staff for the student led council sessions and general assemblies. Bella Grijalva served as Secretary General while Maddie James, Delanyo Mensah, Emily Pauwels, Claire Ingram, Lisa Liu, Sarah Braun and Julia Weber served as staff. Officers included Kaela Ricket, Erik Dabelko and Bella Grijalva. Matthew Kuhnert and Joonwoo Park were elected as officers for the 2020 event next year. A special thanks goes to guest judges Mr. David Dabelko and Ms. Monna French, OU Baker Center and the Athens Police for helping to ensure a positive experience for all students and staff.
